How does emedart work?

I'm still working on my initial config and making some decisions about how I setup fetchart. One strategy I've found a lot online (though not necessarily with beets users) is to get a really nice high quality high res albumart as your cover.jpg, and then only embed that image before you transfer files to another device. But also, when you embed it, embed a smaller version since your media player probably doesn't need that archival quality image. It's fairly straightforward how to setup fetchart to get you a high quality image. What I'm uncertain about is how the embedart plugin works. If it's got a lower size or quality threshold, does it try to search for a new image, or does it just scale the cover.jpg image down using imagemagick? That is what I'd prefer.
