[Config Support]: Camera Size Switches in UI #16054

Describe the problem you are having

When viewing cameras in Frigate, on the main page, at first they look great.

But after a few seconds onscreen my Driveway camera, and 2 others, will change to a squished aspect ratio as shown in this picture.

This problem is always seen on the live view of the camera itself.

I've tried:

specifying the width/height in the "Driveway" camera's detector section. It did not change the behavior.
specifying the height/width in the Go2RTC input. It did not change the behavior.
Transcoding yielded high processor and I immediately stopped transcoding.

It seems like this should be an easy fix because I just need the browser to see the camera as 1920x1080 and it sometimes displays that but it jumps to a 4:3 ratio. I searched, asked AI, and read the manual, but I can't find the solution.

Have you tried another browser besides Chrome? There are some known Chromium MSE related bugs that you may be running into.

I had to go look up the stats

Samsung, Edge, Chrome, and Opera are Chromium based. There's only one actual other choice of browser and that's Firefox.

I tried Firefox and it worked.

So are you saying only Apple Users are natively supported and the rest need to join the 2% of Firefox users. If so, this should probably be well documented. Or a workaround created. I spent multiple hours a day, spanning multiple months trying to fix this.

The difference in decoder implementations between browsers is likely the issue. The ffmpeg source decodes the video differently than native Chromium would. See the linked go2rtc issue I posted above.

Rather than modify my proper URLs for this bug, I added a compatibility layer which will likely use a few % of extra processor to accommodate this go2rtc error.

but Frigate reports 640x320. Why the difference from Frigate's stream?

to be clear, you are using the API incorrectly. You are accessing the mjpeg API not the restream, the mjpeg API is not used for live view except for the debug live view

Not in the browser, when showing a fluent live stream using MSE or WebRTC Frigate must let the browser display it as it is implemented in the browser

Looking at this objectively,

This is a recurring problem without any good solutions
go2RTC is restreaming data, not modifying the content and that keeps them platform/standards independent.
Frigate utilizes and displays the streams in the browser.
This is a display issue that is only present in the browser.
This issue affects all but 2% of non-mac users, who have chosen to use Firefox instead of chromium-based browsers
Chromium is unlikely to change anything and has not changed in the few years this issue has been around.

This seems like there should be some workaround within Frigate NVR in the UI, Settings, and/or the documentation.

That's not accurate, it is a camera specific issue. None of my cameras exhibit this behavior for example no matter what device or browser is used. This is also what the linked go2rtc issue explains as well.

It's already fixable by just using ffmpeg as source.

Yeah. It affects a variety of cameras including TPLink, Wuhan, and others. There have been several issues created in the last 5 years and none of them until now have a definitive solution.

It seems that there is some hidden aspect ratio in the stream which isn't normally respected, used, or reported by Safari, Firefox, go2rtc, Frigate, and ffmpeg as the pixels alone are enough to determine an aspect ratio.

Due to this, I hypothesize these flawed vendors reported the sensor aspect ratio rather than the intended stream aspect ratio as it's basically extra, unused, metadata under most circumstances. However when using Go2rtc+frigate instead of being reencoded, the data is retransmitted pretty much directly to Chrome.

Because this information is not used or reported by go2rtc, frigate, or ffmpeg it makes it very difficult to identify the problem, or even that a problem exists to be reported in the first place. So I think the actual number of users affected is actually much larger than the issues suggest and I have found a lot of issues.

Some sort of logging, or scaling, or at least documentation should be provided by the thing providing the web UI as there is no other good way to find it.

I'll also note that none of my cameras exhibit this issue either, and in the hundreds of support requests we field, this is not an extremely common issue whatsoever.

Frigate also does attempt to read the video's resolution metadata and use that for the MSE player's single camera live view when available.

It really does seem to be camera specific and Chromium related as Nick indicated. The MSE implementation is something the browser handles. Both go2rtc and frigate use the standard calls as documented by MDN.
