1. Chromium doesn't display sites in custom fonts. Even toggling the corresponding switch in per-site settings doesn't force those. Is it possible at all? It was a breeze in Firefox.
2. Is it possible to tinker with the code of the New Tab to grace it with a finish more in line with Firefox and pre-Safari 14, i.e. the Google search removed, the top sites rows added (up to 24 instead of the measly 10).

I think these are general chrome questions rather than specific to chromium-legacy? For 1, I believe overrides only ever worked if the page didn't specify a specific font face. You can use custom stylesheet to work around this. For 2, an extension can create its own new tab page, so it can be styled as you wish.

I see that there's no setting that would be similar to the effect of Ignore site fonts in Firefox or it might be a hidden flag I'm unaware of. Is it the case? Otherwise, what's the point of the option to allow sites to use fonts?
As for the new tab, I want to do without installing one more extension: I have quite a few of them already and they crash in Chromium. One more is overkill.

Is it implied that I have to reinstall Chromium from your pref pane for the flag to stick?

Yes. One of the original reasons I created my PrefPane was that I needed a way to always launch Chromium with the --no-proxy-server command line flag enabled.

You could also replicate what the PrefPane does on an unmodified Chromium Legacy app bundle. Rename the original Chromium binary to something else, and in its place create a script named Chromium which launches the renamed binary with your desired flags. Look at what the PrefPane does as a reference, it should become fairly obvious what's needed.

You really should use an extension though! Then you'll be able to switch it off for websites that are broken without webfonts.

open -a Google\ Chrome --args <your args here> works to pass args to underlying binary. I usually alias this to chrome then just make a habit of launching chrome from cmd instead of via spotlight

@krackers Some of us lowly UI people are more basic and frequently launch Chromium from the Dock, or from Finder. 😁
