Forest service roads #4
Comments
Very likely we will have to edit the roads in OSM to match an official source. I cannot see how to avoid duplication if we have both OSM and a different source displayed. Some potentially useful datasets to use: These are described at: https://data.fs.usda.gov/geodata/edw/datasets.php?dsetCategory=transportation |
Checked these data out. The trail dataset is not so useful because it is "in progress", and it appears that some forests may elect not to contribute data...notably forests within my area of interest. The FS roads layer seems to at least have roads, but only on the forest, so there are "islands" of road segments. These may be useful to identify which roads are open and closed throughout the year. |
The FSTopo graphics have the trails I'm interested in. There is a separate download page for the features on FSTopos here: https://data.fs.usda.gov/geodata/edw/datasets.php?dsetCategory=imagerybasemapsearthcover The "Transportation Line" dataset seems to have both roads and trails. "Transportation Point" has gates, berms, etc. "RoadShield48 Point" has the labels for the roads. "RecFacility Point" has trailheads, campgrounds, etc.
