It would be ideal to have some tests for the container to ensure that everything is working when a new image is built.

The Google Container Structure Test framework seems like the best choice for this at the moment: https://github.com/GoogleContainerTools/container-structure-test

It would be good to build a list of things to be checked here in this issue for discussion before starting any work.
