It would be useful to be able to add type checking (with mypy) as an optional extra when starting a new project

Oh man, yes it would. My knowledge is still really limited but I remember reading about mypy and coming from Typescript thinking to myself that I'll need too look into that because I'm used to having types for my JavaScript.
