RFC #203 - Export to OCI format

Phase 1

The goal for this phase is to deliver an experimental version of the feature, wait for the community to use it and gives feedback to keep improving it

Spec

• Document new flags for exporting to OCI layout format spec#327
• Released in platform API version 0.12

Imgutil

• Implement cnb.Image interface using OCI layout format imgutil#162
• Expose a method to parse an image reference into a local path imgutil#168
• Add annotation org.opencontainers.image.ref.name when image in OCI layout is saved imgutil#174
• Expose a method to parse an image layout identifier imgutil#179

Lifecycle

• Implement the capability to the phases to handle input/output images in OCI layout format lifecycle#953
• Released in lifecycle version 0.17.0
• Running the restorer configured with OCI Layout flags throws an error lifecycle#1194
• Released in lifecycle version 0.17.1

Pack:

• pack build to export to OCI layout format on disk pack#1548
• Released in pack version 0.30.0
• Trying to export to OCI Layout format using an untrusted builder is not working, it exports to the daemon pack#1881
• Released in pack version 0.30.1

Phase 2

The initial idea of this phase was to work in the rebase capability in pack for an Image exported on disk in OCI layout format, we are not sure if this is useful and if it worth it. We would like to hear from the community if this is something valuable to work on

• Implement the SaveFile() method in the layout image interface imgutil#170

Lifecycle

• Rebase on image exported in OCI layout format on disk lifecycle#957
• Released in lifecycle version TBD
