Am I missing something?

Both when I was installing cargo-binstall (which I did using the install command listed in the readme) and trunk (which claims to support cargo-binstall) I got these:

in the case of the install command from the readme, it forced a yes on the question and installed from source, but the whole reason I'm wanting to use cargo-binstall in the first place is because I'm having trouble building trunk from source. What's going on here?

I think we might be hitting rate limit.

Try passing GITHUB_TOKEN, it should help

Yeah that's unfortunate.

We are eyeing for solution to fix that, like taking pre-discovered manifest from taiki-e/install-action.

Perhaps we would also try discovering the manifest and cache it in cargo-binstall itself.

Though for trunk, the simplest solution would be to add a package.binstall to Cargo.toml, which would make resolving much faster without having to provide the token.
