We have been using Cardkit for a while now, and we're starting to see folks in the newsroom embrace it.

I recently added some "overlay" layers. These are black or white layers that can have their opacity adjusted to help text on top read more easily.

These layers work great. The problem is that since they fill the entire area of the card, you can't click and drag anything behind/under them.

Could you add a control (maybe a checkbox) that would allow a user to toggle "enable/disable" on a layer? In this way, I could have those overlay layers disabled by default, and users could easily drag all items on the card. But if they decide later they need an overlay, they can click it on.
