About MTD

MTD is a fully equipped multitrack studio based in Essex, UK dedicated to the transfer / digitisation of multitrack tapes, enabling the client to produce mix-downs using their own DAW.

Transfers to .wav files are routinely performed at 24 bit/48 or 96 kHz, onto client-supplied memory stick or HDD. Data DVDs can be supplied if preferred.

SSS and Tape baking:

Due to the likelihood of Sticky Shed Syndrome, and the dire consequences of playing a tape in this condition, all tapes are baked in a thermostatically controlled oven at 55 degrees C for 24 hours, before being played.

History of Multi Track

Simple reel-to-reel tape recording was made possible with the invention of the German-English 'Blattnerphone' in the late 1920s. This machine, which used steel tape as the recording medium was superseded by the improved German 'Magnetophons' of the 1930s. Whereas these earliest machines were 'mono' recorders, two-track (stereo) devices were later developed giving a 'life-like' stereo image by means of separate left and right channels.

This idea of having separate 'tracks' on the same reel of tape was developed further, and in 1955 the Ampex company released the first example of a Multitrack recorder comprising 8 discrete recordable segments or 'tracks' spread over a one inch wide tape. Multiple sounds recorded in this way could be played back as a single, perfectly synchronised cohesive track.

The flexibility of the Multitrack process allowed for the discrete recording of all of the instruments and vocals for a piece of music. Prior to this, all the singers and instrumentalists of a musical piece had to perform together, and this 'one-take' process did not allow for any corrections of errors that may have occurred.
Furthermore, Multitracking gave the audio engineer the freedom to alter the sound of each individual track, by means of a mixing desk, controlling such elements as volume levels, tone and reverb. It also simplified the processes of over-dubbing and vocal/instrumental harmonisation to create different layers and effects, which have become commonplace in the recording industry.

In the decades that followed, the range of multitrack formats grew to provide 1/4 inch, 1/2 inch, 1 inch and 2 inch tapes with tracks numbering from 4 to 24.
