What is the idea

Generation Schools Network needs a relational database application capable of handling data for all its students, across all schools in all the regions it works within. This database needs to hold a permanent record of any and all data required by GSN. It needs to deliver quick, simple, and clear analysis and visualizations in order to ensure that GSN can track its own effectiveness and its progress towards grant goals.

Why

GSN’s current data tracking system impacts the effectiveness with which Generation Schools Network can achieve its goals. When GSN’s current data tracking system breaks down, data is thrown out of analyses because it is inconsistent or incomplete, and whole groups of students are thrown out with it. Their progress, or lack of it, ceases to exist to anyone at GSN except the social workers working with that student within a school. The loss of data can lead to inaccurate analyses that dictate certain grant goals have not been met when in fact they have. This can lead to a reduction in grant money received from the EARSS program, and discourage applications to new grants with greater requirements. The amount of help GSN can give to students who need it most is hindered.

Additional Background Context

If successful, this database could offer the opportunity to perform predictive data science. GSN currently has won entry into Colorado’s Expelled and At-Risk Student Services program, which grants $7.5 million to educational institutions in Colorado. The EARSS program is at its core an early intervention program. GSN would love to be able to identify students who are in danger of becoming at-risk in order to take preventative measures. Proof of concept there could lead to GSN and Code for Denver becoming a flagship success of the EARSS program, and the awarding of new grant money. Furthemore, the average report holding all relevant data for a single student takes up 0.14 KB, meaning that while this project can start within one or two BOCES, there is potential to build an application capable of scaling up to an organizational level, meaning that Code for Denver’s work could impact schools across Colorado and New York.
