This is needed in cases where Plone doesn't normalize strings. For instance, the tags (Subject) field: it's not possible to use ATVocabularyManager to create a simple vocabulary of tags to be used inside a eea.facetednavigation widget, as noted in: http://plone.293351.n2.nabble.com/eea-facetednavigation-and-Products-ATVocabularyManager-td7572855.html

I suggest changing the id field to be implicit and title based and adding a new less restricted key field.
