Wi4MPI for MPI Packages?

Hi,

For conda-forge, has anyone experimented with Wi4MPI to abstract the MPI implementations away? I think we could use this to cut down significantly on the build variants of HDF5 and other packages that depend (optionally) on MPI.

I wanted to try building mpi4py with Wi4MPI on my Fedora 42 system, but building Wi4MPI from sources failed.

MPI 5+ have a stable ABI. MPICH has already implemented it and should be available in the next major release. Open MPI is currently working on it open-mpi/ompi#13280
I'm not opposed to Wi4MPI, but I would rather wait for MPI ABI availability rather than dealing legacy workarounds.
