Link to original for transformed inserted images

I normally use a lightbox script so that people can click/touch an image an get the original full size in an overlay, instead of the smaller transformed image. This seems to be a very common feature.
It looks like the only way to enable this would be for content editors to select the image, select the link icon and then navigate to where the image is stored in Assets. Which is a bit of a faff and prone to error or forgetting to do it.
In the past I would have used a Matrix field and then coded all this in the template, but CKEditor is a much nice presentation for authors than Matrix.
Is there any way to automatically add a link to the original version of the transformed image?
