Number field validation should only occur on non-empty values

As it stands, a number field can't be empty (will normalize to 0).

This can be frustrating, especially when you set a min. value. The field wont validate with it empty.

The number validation should only take place in the event of a non-empty field. Furthermore, one could mark field as required to bypass this.
