Darling Progress Report Q2 2023 | Darling Development Blog

It's been a while since our last post (4 years!) but we're finally back with another progress report. The past few years have been an exciting time for Darling with lots of changes happening in the lower levels, numerous bugs getting fixed, and many stubs being added. All these changes have been made with one goal in mind: a better experience for users. We have plans for further improvements, which we hope will make easier to use Darling and improve compatibility.

Love to see it! I cant wait until linux will be able to run windows and macOS apps. Then we will never need anything else. Keep up the good work and thanks for all you've done so far!

A thing I would like to see in Darling some day is full file system emulation (so that Darling could manage its own VFS tree, FD table,...) as a potential way of replacing overlayfs.

We are definitely looking into reimplementing overlayfs functionality ourselves, as mentioned in "The Future" section. The fd table there's no need to reimplement, and on the contrary the fact that emulated Darwin fds are full real Linux fds is rather nice, and we make use of it.

It will be a long while before more complicated applications like Final Cut and Logic are working/usable in Darling.
