Actually working with a public repository has an activation energy. It would be nice if in this lesson there was an exercise that gave students a chance to work with putting data in a repository. We don't want to create a lot of clutter though in a public repo.

Totally agree. I wish there'd be sandbox that would allow us to work through archiving a Github repo on Zenodo.

One can use Rfigshare, let article in private mode and delete them at the end of the course. Or make it part of an exercise where students must go and publish their results at the end. Analysing some twitter (see twitteR package) data may be fun, as the data would change each time there is a lecture.
