currently all snaps run as root (but within containers so still isolated so should be ok).
There is a plan to add non-root user support to snapd 1Q 19.
This Issue to track that.

Also note that only snap services run as root, you can still have snap apps run by the user that run as the calling user (which could be root)

Any updates on this? This could be pretty useful e.g. on remote accounts gifted/lent by a friend, like if you just want to run it on your user. I really like the idea and can't wait to see it put in motion!
