<h1 class="post-title">다이어트한 셰리 위스키. 글렌드로낙 포그 10년</h1>

<p>싱글 몰트 위스키 자체가 매니악한 취미임은 분명하나, 글렌드로낙(GlenDronach)이라는 이름은 한 번쯤 들어보셨을 수도 있습니다. 셰리 오크통 숙성으로 유명한 위스키로 국내에선 맥캘란과 함께 꼽히는 위스키입니다. 셰리 오크통 숙성의 유행을 이끌었지만, 기본적으로 가격대가 높은 맥캘란보다 저렴해서 찾기는 더 쉬운 술이기도 합니다.</p>
<p>유명세가 있는 만큼 제가 글렌드로낙을 접한 시점은 싱글 몰트 위스키 입문 초기로 빠른 편이었습니다. 그때 마신 글렌드로낙 12년은 아직 순수한 편이었던 제 미각에 셰리 오크통 숙성 특유의 부드럽고 눅진한 달콤함을 아낌없이 퍼부어주었습니다. 지난해 겨울 제주도를 떠나는 항공편의 출발 시각이 10분도 남지 않은 때 급하게 들린 면세점에서 망설임 끝에 1L짜리 글렌드로낙 10년을 고른 이유는 아마 그런 기억이 있었기 때문일 겁니다. 결론부터 말씀드리면, 글렌드로낙 10년은 글렌드로낙에 대한 기억을 완벽하게 만들어주지는 못했습니다.</p>

<p>패키지는 시가 잎처럼 깊고 어두운 갈색 배경으로 전형적인 원통 형태입니다. 세리프체와 손 글씨체로 적힌 황금빛 텍스트는 흔한 것이기는 하지만 충분히 고급집니다.</p>
<p>글렌드로낙 증류소는 스코틀랜드 하이랜드에 자리 잡고 있습니다. 스카치위스키 산지 중에서 가장 넓은 지역이라 이곳에서 나는 위스키의 특징을 명확히 단정하기는 어렵지만, 전반적으로 과일 향이 풍부한 술이 나옵니다. 오반, 달모어처럼 경쟁력 있는 위스키가 만들어지는 곳이기도 합니다. 1826년 포그(Forgue)에 설립된 이후 큰불이 나서 전소되는 일도 있었고 몇 차례 주인이 바뀌는 일(그중에는 글렌피딕의 윌리엄 그랜트도 포함되어 있습니다)도 있었습니다. 그 뒤 오랫동안 티쳐스(Teacher’s) 위스키의 원액을 만들다가 1996년 증류소의 주인 회사인 얼라이드 디스틸러즈(Allied Distillers)의 정책에 따라 운영을 중단합니다. 그러다가 2002년 다시 문을 열고 현재의 싱글 몰트 위스키 라인업을 제작하게 되었고 지금에 이릅니다. 위기도 회복도 많았던 증류소입니다.</p>

<p>냉각 여과도 거치지 않고 색소 첨가도 없는 글렌드로낙 10년의 색상은 숙성 연수가 길지 않은 만큼 밝은 보리색입니다. 투명한 병에 빙 둘리지 않고 일부 공간만을 차지하고 있는 라벨은 이런 글렌드로낙의 솔직한 색상을 생생하게 보여줍니다.</p>

<p>코르크를 열고 잔에 흘리니 잔잔한 향기가 스멀스멀 올라옵니다. 셰리 오크통 숙성 위스키에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 건포도, 건자두 향기와 함께 각종 과일을 졸여 잼을 만든 듯한 달콤한 냄새가 있습니다. 물 몇 방울을 떨어뜨리면 향기는 한층 커져서 체리와 오렌지, 코코아와 꿀 향기와 같은 숨어있는 디테일까지 튀어나옵니다. 전반적으로 꽃 내음보다는 과실 쪽 냄새가 있고, 향기가 강하지는 않지만 그만큼 알코올 부즈도 없어서 우아한 느낌을 줍니다.</p>
<p>리뷰 첫 부분에서 언급한 셰리 오크통 숙성은 말 그대로 증류를 마신 위스키 원액을 셰리 와인을 숙성하던 오크통에 넣고 숙성했다는 말입니다. 셰리 와인은 스페인의 주정 강화 와인으로 옆 나라 포르투갈에서 만든 주정 강화 와인 포트 와인과는 다르게 병(혹은 통)입 숙성만 거치는 게 아니라 브랜디를 섞어 만들기 때문에 드라이함과 특징적인 풍미가 있게 됩니다. 이런 셰리 와인을 담았던 오크통에 위스키를 숙성하게 되면 끈적한 느낌의 단맛과 꿉꿉하다 싶은 건과일 향기를 가지게 됩니다.</p>
<p>글렌드로낙 10년 역시 셰리 오크통 숙성 위스키로 올로로소, 페드로 히메네스(둘 다 셰리 와인의 분류) 캐스크를 사용합니다.</p>

<p>글렌드로낙 10년을 입에 넣자 눅진하고 기름진 질감이 가장 먼저 느껴집니다. 향을 맡으며 만났던 그 많던 과실 냄새는 어디가고 남은 건 포도, 귤, 사과 정도의 시큼함입니다. 빵과 크림 맛도 있습니다. 저번 <a title="한 모음에 꽉 찬 화려함. 하이랜드 파크 12년" href="/highland-park-12" target="_blank">하이랜드 파크 12년</a>에서 맛보았던 부피감 있는 느낌은 아니고 열기에 푹 녹아 옅고 부드러운 감각입니다. 스파이시함은 아주 아주 가녀려서 즐거운 변화구라기보다는 글렌드로낙 10년이 형성하는 단맛의 흐름에 묻은 얼룩 같습니다. 여기까지만 말하면 꽤 괜찮은 셰리 오크통 숙성 위스키 같습니다. 그러나 피니쉬가 상당히 맹맹합니다. 위스키를 목구멍으로 넘기고 난 후의 입안은 미끌미끌한 질감과 함께 조금의 귤껍질 향만 남아있을 뿐 허무하다는 느낌을 지울 수 없습니다.</p>

<p>글렌드로낙 10년은 셰리 오크통 숙성 위스키이면서도 끈적한 농도감이 적은 독특한 위스키입니다. 과일 향기가 풍부하고 맛도 적당히 풍성하지만, 피니쉬의 여운은 찾아보기 힘들고 위스키를 복잡하고 미묘하게 만들어주는 여러 요소가 빠져있습니다. 비록 700mL이긴 하지만 숙성 기간이 더 길고 향과 맛 모두 훨씬 다층적인 글렌드로낙 12년을 남대문 등에서는 7만 원 정도에 구매할 수 있다는 사실을 생각해보면 많이 아쉬운 위스키가 맞습니다.</p>
<p>가벼운 특성 덕분에 쭉쭉 입에 넣는 대로 들어가는 술이기는 합니다. 아무리 그래도 1L인데 보름 만에 바닥을 보일 줄은 몰랐습니다. 폭설 내리는 밤은 글렌드로낙과 함께 또다시 지나갑니다.</p>
