If there is no post content, this theme should display the summary if set.

To be created, a post has to have either a name, content, or an excerpt in WordPress.

From my checks, the original 2016 and therefore my fork actually shows the excerpt if set regardless.

The original 2016 theme doesn't use Excerpt the way that most themes do. Instead it bootstraps that field and uses it as a "kicker" as it's known in the magazine trade or more commonly as a sub-title under the_title.

This can cause some quirky output behaviour as a result when using this theme the same way most themes use the excerpt. It also means you can't use the excerpt for things like bridgy publish easily.
