getting following error message when running in asp.net page

0x800a138f - JavaScript runtime error: Unable to get property 'replace' of undefined or null reference

Get error on this line;

html = template.replace(/#(?:{|%7B)(.*?)(?:}|%7D)/g, function($1, $2){
