Gnome Shell exposes through a menu in Quick Settings which applications are running in the background and action to stop them. I dont recall Pantheon having a way to indicate that ? (or maybe i missed it)
An elegant way would be to have the dock do this ? Since the dock already presents which apps are currently used, in plain sight, it would make sense to have it control such. (IIRC MacOS allows to close background applications through the dock, but does not indicate anything)
If unpinned, an app icon could appear, same as if it had a window open and running, but with something indicating it is in the background ? A small ghost, a "play" icon, "Zzz"... It would also make the dock more interactive as a way to control what is happening.

Just a random idea
