Problem

Dock magnification (also known as dock zoom) has been removed.
Maybe I am wrong, but it seems that the patent "US7434177B1," which relates to the magnification of the Dock, has already expired:
https://patents.google.com/patent/US7434177B1/en
Therefore, the code that hides this functionality to avoid legal issues appears to be unnecessary now.

Proposal

I am opening this issue to request that dock magnification be made available in "elementary OS."
elementary OS users have had to wait patiently for years to have this functionality, which brings several advantages, including essential accessibility improvements for some visually impaired people.

I just discovered the same. Would love to see that feature back.

Personally I don't love dock magnification because it results in blurry icons and I'm honestly not sure what the benefits actually are here. I think magnification is off by default in macOS these days and other modern platforms don't have magnification either afaik. This is also a mouse-only feature so I'm not sure I really buy the a11y argument unless you can elaborate on that.

Basically I think we need some good reasons here, especially because something like this is going to immediately generate "copying macOS" discourse

I think this really comes down just to personal preference. It's an effect that some people find cool-looking but some people find annoying, so definitely should be something that's toggleable. Since plank already had that functionality it could have been trivial to re-enable it, but with the new dock not sure how much of work would it be and if it would really be worth it
