Version 1.18 brings many improvements to the tags panel:
Tags: now, adding, adds to all selected nodes.
Tags: right click on tag opens context menu. Option to remove tag.
Tags: basic filtering of the tags list in the tags panel.
Tags: highlighters for tags. It highlights nodes that have all the tags in the selection.
Tags: tags selection. A tag is added to the selection on the right click context menu. The tag selection list appears on the fist inspector. Also there, appears a list of nodes containing the tags.

In 1.24:

Inspector shows the tags present in the node:

Hovering over a tag in the tags panel, automatically places it in the tag selection:

This "hover selection" is cleaned once a node is selected on the map.
