Handler doesn't recognize updated data

I'm trying to run this code in a serverless function:

var data = { abc: 123 }
const app = app.express()
app.use('/endpoint', mw1, mw2(data))

What happens:

• On every request:
  • mw1 updates the data object depending on the request.
  • mw2 never gets the data updated in mw1. It only ever gets the original value.

What I want to happen:

• On every request:
  • mw1 updates the data object depending on the request.
  • mw2 runs using the updated data object.

Any ideas what I might be missing or a way to accomplish what I'm after?

I don't own mw2 so I can't manipulate it. I can only change what gets passed to it. It is expecting JSON.

I think I figured this out with help from a friend.

var data = { abc: 123 }
const app = app.express()
function mw1(req, res, send) {
    req.data = data
    next()
}
function mw3(req, res, next) {
    mw2(req.data)(req, res)
    next()
}
app.use('/endpoint', mw1, mw3)
