Guest User Checkout shows empty Cart in Magento

Hi,
I setup the whole vue-storefront instance with magento2 on linux/Ubuntu 16.04/nginx(reverse proxy). The external checkout works for logged in users but not for guests. When I checkout as a guest magento shows an empty shopping cart page. I deleted the browser storage and tried different browsers.
I cant seem to find any logs to help me debug.
