News and Happenings in and around Flatcar Container Linux

• The specialised Linux OS working group of CNCF's TAG Runtime had their foundational meeting last week.
  • Bottlerocket, Talos, OpenSUSE MicroOS, Kairos, and Google COS are represented.
  • @miao0miao and @stmcginnis who chair the group
• Image-based / Special Purpose Linux and Secure Measured Boot devroom proposed for FOSDEM 2024
  • please keep your fingers crossed for us!
  • last FOSDEM devroom was a massive success; there's significant growth in interest of our work so we'll have (even) much more to deliver in 2024

Distro news

Sysexts

• @t-lo is making progress with the torcx replacement PR, which will pave the way for leaner base OS images in the future.
• @krnowak and @tormath1 have kicked off work on mutable sysexs for upstream ystemd
• @pothos identified some auxiliary work that needs to happen for seamless integration

Security

• Security: glibc and samba updated, new glibc and curl updates coming

CAPI: Aligned on next steps

• @sayanchowdhury and @tormath1 will visit CAPI providers during their office hours and demo sysext-based CAPI nodes
• CAPO was demoed already, CAPZ is planned next
• New sysext bakery Kubernetes release includes minor fix (symlink for kubelet)

Releases

• Major new stable + LTS are out
• GRUB update is currently stabilising in Beta. Beta will need at least 1 more major iteration, but next major Stable will ship GRUB update.
• Systemd will be updated to latest release and stabilised in the second-next Stable major release
• Kernel 6.1 is currently in Beta and coming to Stable (pending next major Beta release)
  • Since the current Stable is still on 5.15, it will receive 5.15 patches directly
• We're looking for hands to start working on Kernel 6.5 integration in a branch so we’re ready for 6.6 when it comes out
