I've got the problem, mentioned in Subj, followed by kernel panic due to the same reason. Is there any workaround?

Everything is by the guide "Getting Started". Tried 32Mb hard drive, and the hard drive without capacity (8Mb drive + wrench).
Am I supposed to format the hard drive somehow before using it?
