How can I deploy an ERC1820 registry for a forge test environment?

If try to create a new ERC777, from OpenZeppelin, in a forge test, it will fail with [FAIL. Reason: Revert] testERC777().

That seems to be because ERC777 looks for an ERC1820Registry, and fails when it can't find it.

To solve this, I used cast to grab the bytecode from the expected address on mainnet:

Then, I used cheats.etch to write the bytecode to the 0x1820a4B7618BdE71Dce8cdc73aAB6C95905faD24 address, and wrote a test to see if it works; but it still reverts. :(

If I decompile the byte code, it looks as if the setInterfaceImplementer function (called by ERC777) is real and exists.

Am I misunderstanding how etch works? Am I going about this wrong?

I think bytes("blablabla") just converts the string to bytes - you should use bytes(hex"blabla") instead (or just hex"blabla"?)
