  • GO term ID and label for which you request a definition update

GO:0008253 5'-nucleotidase activity

  • New proposed definition (genus-differentia pattern, plus additional information if needed)

Catalysis of the reaction: a 5'- ribo nucleotide + H2O = a ribo nucleoside + phosphate.

  • Reference(s)
    PMID:nnnnnnn

  • Additional information

Actually I guess all the children are ribo, but in this case what happens with dNMP terms?

Dunno. Maybe in the GO world as redefined, they are fated to remain eternally phosphorylated?

deoxy is of a separate branch.

Is the action to move GO:0002953 under GO:0008252 nucleotidase activity?

I think you can do one of 2 things:

  1. move GO:0002953 under GO:0008252
    and
remove ribo from the definition of GO:0008252

OR

  1. Keep ribo in the definition of GO:0008252 but update the label to 5' ribonucleotidase
    Catalysis of the reaction: a 5'- ribo nucleotide + H2O = a ribo nucleoside + phosphate.
and create a common parent "5' nucleotidase activity" to GO:0002953 and GO:0008252

In the parlance of EC, nucleotidases are for ribonucleosides (EC:3.1.3.5/6/7) and apparently not for deoxyribonucleoside (EC:3.1.3.89).
GO:0008252 nucleotidase activity is however, for both as defined. I think it may be best to rename it to (deoxy)-nucleotidase activity. And then move GO:0002953 5'-deoxynucleotidase activity under it.

But then, GO:0008252 nucleotidase activity is defined by RHEA:22140 that has no direct annotations in UniProt. There are 9 direct EXP annotations to this term. I do wonder if all of them can be moved to a more specific term thus making it possible for GO:0008252 nucleotidase activity to become DO-NOT-ANNOTATE or even obsoleted.
