Alternatively, we should show an error dialog if the zoom to layer fails.

By "no extent", do you mean for example a vector layer with no features?

Yes, I was also able to get this "no extent" error coming from OpenLayers with another type of layer which I don't remember. But I understand the extent is basically the layer bounding box.
