The Node Gradle plugin is almost abandoned and not compatible with Gradle 5:
srs/gradle-node-plugin#315 srs/gradle-node-plugin#299
In the comments in those issues someone suggests https://plugins.gradle.org/plugin/com.liferay.node but I'm not really sure if the plugin has all the things that we need for the frontend stuff.

it does not yet look like it has much traction but jhipster thinking about giving it a shot sounds good, i think.. (node-gradle/gradle-node-plugin#2 (comment))
