XVI. BAHMAN FILS D'’ISFENDIAR (Son règne dura 99 ans.)

BAHMAN VENGE LA MORT D’ISFENDIAR,
Bahman s’assit sur le trône de son grand-père, se
revêlit d'une armure, et se mit à faire des largesses.
Il donna à l'armée de l'argent, il donna de l'or, il
distribua beaucoup de gouvernements de province et
de frontières. Il convoqua une assemblée des sages,
des grands et des héros expérimentés dans les af-
faires, et il parla ainsi : « Vous tous, jeunes et vieux,
«vous tous, hommes à l'esprit serein, vous savez ce
«qui est arrivé à [sfendiar par la rotation heureuse
«et malheureuse du sort; vous savez ce qu'a fait de
«son vivant Rustem, ce qu'a fait Zal, ce vieillard
«sorcier, et que Faramourz ouvertement ct secrète-
«ment ne médile que vengeance contre nous. Et ma
«lêle aussi est pleine de douleur, mon cœur est gon-
tflé de sang et mon cerveau n'est rempli que de

«vengeance. Deux héros comme Nousch-Ader et
« Nousch-Zad, à qui la mort n’inspirait jamais de la
«crainte, puis un homme comme Isfendiar, qui a
«fait revivre dans le monde là fortune des rois,
«furent tués dans le Zaboulistan d’une manière si
« lamentable que les bêtes en devinrent folles de dou-
rleur, et que les images dans le palais pleurent
«encore sur le meurtre d'Isfendiar, En pensant à ce
«sang de nos parents illustres, Ô mes jeunes et vail-
«lants cavaliers, aucun homme de race pure ne
«cachera dans l'ombre le joyau de sa vertu, chacun
«sera pour le monde un ciel protecteur, imitant le
«roi Feridoun, qui, pour venger le sang de Djem-
«schid , a fait disparaître Zohak du nombre des braves
«sur la terre. Plus tard Minouichehr a amené d’A-
«+ mol une puissante armée contre Tour et le farouche
«+ Selm, est allé en Chine, a vengé.son grand-père,
«et a mis les plaines au niveau des montagnes par
« des monceaux de morts. Keï Khosrou, lorsqu'il eut
«échappé à Afrasiab, a rempli la terre de sang
«comme une mer. Mon père est venu et a demandé
«le prix du sang de Lohrasp ; et j'ai devant moi un
«devoir semblable, car Faramourz, après que son
« père eut péri, a levé la tête jusqu'au soleil bril-
«lant, est allé dans le Kaboul pour venger Rustem,
«et a abaissé dans la poussière le pays entier ; on ne
« distinguait plus la terre au milieu du sang, et on
« lançait les chevaux sur les cadavres amoncelés. Mais

«moi je suis encore plus propre à la vengeance, car
“Je pousse mon cheval contre les éléphants et les
«lions, et je vengerai Isfendiar, un cavalier tel qu’on
«n'en trouverait pas si l'on énumérait tous les héros
«illustres dans le monde. Que vous semble-t-il, et
- que répondez - vous ? Esssayez de me donner un avis
«qui porte bonheur. »
L’armée entendit les paroles de Bahman, tous les
amis du roi s'écrièrent : « Nous sommes tes esclaves,
«nos cœurs sont remplis de tendresse pour toi. Tu
sais mieux que nous ce qui s'est fait autrefois ; tu
«es le plus puissant des hommes de guerre. Fais tes
re volontés dans le monde, et puisses-tu en tirer de la
rgloire et du renom ! Personne ne désobéira à tes
ordres, car qui oserait enfreindre le pacte qui nous
«lie ?» Cette réponse de l’armée rendit le roi encore
plus ardent pour la vengeance; tous se préparèrent
pour la guerre du Séistan ; c’est elle qu'ils voulaient,
c'est pour elle qu’ils se levèrent. À l'aube du jour
les trompettes résonnèrent, la poussière que soule-
vaient les troupes rendit le-ciel couleur d’'ébène, et
une glorieuse armée se mit en route, cent mille
cavaliers prêts à frapper de l'épée.
BAHMAN CHARGE ZAL DE CHAÎNES.
Arrivé près du Hirmend, Bahman choisit un
noble messager, l'envoya auprès du Destan fils de Sam
et le chargea de messages de toute’ espèce, disant :

« La vie m'est devenue amère sur cette terre par la
«mort d'Isfendiar et par le meurtre de Nousch-Ader
“et de Nousch-Zad, deux nobles princes, deux
«hommes de glorieuse race que j'ai à venger. Main-
etenant je vais délivrer mon cœur de cette longue
«colère, et remplir de $ang le lit du flenve.de
« Zaboul. »
Le messager se rendit auprès de Zai et lui répéta
ces paroles, et la douleur et le chagrin devinrent les
compagnons de l'âme de Zal. Il répondit : «Si le roi
«veut réfléchir sur la mort d'Isfendiar, il reconnaîtra
«qu’elle fut l'œuvre du sort. Mon âme en a été rem-
«plie d'angoisse. Tu as été témoin de ce qui s'est
«passé de bien et de mal; mais tu n'as éprouvé de
«moi que du bien et aucun mal. Rustem ne s’est pas
«soustrait aux ordres d'Isfendiar, tu as vu que son
âme était l'esclave de l’obéissance qu’il lui devait ;
« mais la fin de lon père, ce noble et puissant prince,
«approchait, et c’est alors qu’il devint dur pour Rus-
«tem. Les lions et les dragons vaillants dans les forêts
« n'échappent pas à la griffe du sort. Sans doute lu
«as entendu raconter ce que Sam le cavalier a fait
«dans son temps par sa bravoure, et qu'il a continué
«ainsi jusqu'au moment où Rustem put tirer son
« épée tranchante. Les hauts faits de Rustem sur le
«champ de l'honneur et des combals se sont passés
«sous Îles yeux de tes ancêtres. [1 a eu soin de toi
«comme la plus humble des nourrices, et, à l’armée.

«il était parmi les plus nobles de tes héros. Main-
«tenant Rustem a péri misérablement, et tout le
« Zaboulistan en est rempli d’émoi. Si tu veux re-
e noncer au combat contre nous, si tu veux réfléchir
e gracieusement sur nos affaires, si tu veux venirict,
“oublier toute cette colère et calmer ce pays par ta
æ bonté, tous les riches trésors du Destan et de Sam,
«leurs ceintures d'or et leurs brides d'or, je les ap-
« porterai devant toi quand tu viendras: car tu es le
«roi, et les prands sont ton troupeau. »
Zal donna au messager un cheval et de l'or, il lui
fit beaucoup de présents de toute espèce. Le noble
messager revint auprès du roi, et lui rapporta ce
qu’il avait vu et entendu chez le Destan ; le fortuné
Bahman l'écouta, mais 1l n’accepta pas les excuses
de Zal, et se mit en grande colère. IL envahit le
pays, l'âme pleine de chagrin, la tête remplie du
désir de la vengeance, le cœur poussant des soupirs.
Zal fils de Sam le cavalier alla à sa rencontre avec
tout ce qu'il y avait d’illustre dans le Séistan. Arrivé
près de Bahman, 1l mit pied à terre et l'adora,
disant : «C’est le moment de la grâce, c'est le jour
«où l'on doit purifier son cœur de la douleur et de la
«colère. Voici le Destan fils de Sam le cavalier qui
evient à toi humblement. un bâton à la main. Je
el’en conjure par les services que nous avons rendus,
« par les soins que nous avons pris de ton enfance,
«sois clément et ne parle pas du passé; fais de

« grandes aclions, mais ne cherche pas à le venger
«des morts.»
Ces paroles excitèrent la colère de Bahman, ét
c'est ainsi que fut manqué le but de Zal. A l'instant
le roi fit charger ses pieds de chaines, et refusa d’é-
couter les conseils de son destour et de son trésorier.
On emporta par charges de chameau, du palais du
Destan fils de Sam le cavalier, de l'or monnayé,
des perles non percées, des trônes, des tapis de
toutes sortes, de la vaisselle d'or et des couronnes
d'or, de la vaisselle d'argent, des boucles d'oreilles
et des ceintures : on prit des chevaux arabes avec des
brides d’or, des épées indiennes aux fourreaux d'or,
des vêtements et des caisses pleines d'argent, du
musc et du camphre, et toutes sortes de choses que
Rustem avait accumulées avec peine, des trésors
qu'il avait reçus des rois et des seigneurs. Bahman
livra au pillage tout le Zaboulistan, et donna à tous
les grands des caisses d'argent et des couronnes.
FARAMOURZ COMBAT BAHMAN ET PERD LA VIE.
Faramourz reçut ces nouvelles à la frontière de Bosi ;
il s’affligea et se prépara à venger son grand-père.
Ïl rassembla une armée et se mit en route contre
Bahman, parlant sans cesse des combats que Rustem
avait livrés. Lorsque Bahman apprit cette marche, il
en fut troublé sur son trône impérial; il fit préparer
les bagages, fit monter à cheval ses troupes, et

marcha pendant deux semaines, jour et nuit. Le
bruit des clairons et des clochettes fit trembler le
cœur des montagnes, le ciel noircit la face du
monde comme du bitume, et les flèches tombaient
de ces ténèbres comme une grèle. Les coups de
hache et les frémissements des arcs rendaient la terre
plus agitée que le ciel. Pendant trois jours et trois
nuits, sous la lumière du soleil et sous le clair de la
lune, il pleuvait sur ce champ de bataille des coups
de massue et d'épée d'acier, et le ciel forma un
brouillard de la poussière que soulevaient les ar-
mées ; le quatrième jour s'éleva un orage tel que le
jour se confondait avec la nuit : le vent soufflait vers
Faramourz, et le roi du monde se réjouit de la tem-
pête; il suivit les nuées de poussière, son épée tran-
chante en main, et porta la destruction dans l'armée
ennemie. Des hommes de Bost, de l'armée du Za-
boulistan, et des braves de Kaboul, accoutumés à
frapper de l'épée, 11 ne demeura pas un cavalier sur
le champ de bataille ; pas un de ces nobles pleins de
fierté ne resta; tous tournèrent le dos et abandon-
nèrent honteusement Faramourz. Tout le champ
de bataille n'était que des montagnes de morts des
deux armées, jetés les uns sur les autres.
Faramourz, avec quelques hommes avides de
combats, tenait bravement tête ; tout son corps était
couvert de blessures faites par l'épée, car c'était un
fils de lion et un lion lui-même. Il savait que ce

jour était le jour de sa perte, que son temps élait
venu, que c'était là le piége de la destinée. Îl dit :
«Je me suis jeté dans la gueule du dragon, je ne
«sortirai pas vivant de ce lieu, mais je vais acquérir
«ici, par ma massue et mon épée tranchante, un
« nom qui durera jusqu'à la résurrection. » Il s'élança
sur le centre de l’armée, de manière à pénétrer jus-
qu'auprès du roi; il abattit quelques-uns des chefs
des braves, tous des hommes illustres et des cham-
pions de l’armée. Quand les héros le virent, ils furent
troublés, et lancèrent-contre lui une masse de trou-
pes; ces cavaliers l’entourèrent ; le lion furieux était
fatigué par ses blessures; son destrier, affaibli par les
pointes des flèches qui le frappaient, tomba par terre
épuisé. Faramourz saisit à l'instant sa lourde mas-
sue et resta vainqueur des braves; mais son sang
avait tant coulé que ses forces l’abandonnèrent ; il
s'arrêta et demeura silencieux. À la fin un de ces
lions rugissants fit prisonnier le héros illustre et le
conduisit du champ de bataille vers Bahman. Le roi
haineux le regarda pendant quelque temps, mais
l'aspect du héros ne put le résoudre à lui faire grâce
de la vie. Il ordonna qu'on dressät un gibet, et y fit
attacher Faramourz vivant ; il fit pendre cet homme
au corps d'éléphant la tête en bas, et à la fin Ar-
deschir, le Keïanide illustre, le fit tuer par vengeance
avec une pluie de flèches.

BAHMAN REND LA LIBERTÉ À ZAL ET S’'EN RETOURNE
DANS L’IRAN.
Le généreux Beschouten, qui était le Destour du
roi, eut le cœur affligé de ce carnage. Il se mit de-
bout devant Île maître du monde, disant : «O roi
«plein de justice et de droiture! si tu avais de la
. «vengeance dans le cœur, tu l'as exercée; tu l'as
etant exercée qu'il n’y a plus rien à faire. Main-
«tenant n’ordonne plus ces pillages, ces meurtres,
eces combats et ces agitations; cesse d'approuver
«tout ce bruit! Crains Dieu et aie honte devant nous;
«réfléchis sur la rotation du sort, qui élève l’un au-
«dessus des plus hauts nuages, et réduit l’autre à
«l'angoisse, à l'impuissance et à l'abjection. Ton père,
«le maître du monde, la gloire des armées, n'est-il
«pas allé chercher un cercueil dans le Nimrouz? Et
eRustem, n'est-il pas allé chasser dans le Kaboul
«pour mourir dans un fossé? Toi, à roi de noble
«race! tant que tu vivras, garde-toi de faire du mal
«à un homme de bonne naissance. Quand le fils de
«Sam fils de Neriman se plaindra de toi dans ses
«chaînes au tout-puissant Père nourricier des hommes,
«tu dois trembler, si bonne que soit ton étoile, car
ec'est devant le Créateur qu'il porte sa cause. Gar-
edien du trône des Keïanides, comme Rustem, il
n'a pas reculé devant les fatigues et les combats;
«c'est de lui que tu as reçu: ton trône comme un

« héritage, et non pas de Guschtasp ou d'Isfendiar.
« Prends toute l'époque, depuis Keï-Kobad jusqu'au
«sage Keï Khosrou, c'est à son épée qu'ils ont dû
«leur puissance, ét tous l'ont tenu pour plus pré-
« cieux que le monde entier. Fais tomber ses chaines,
+si tu es homme de sens, et détourne ton cœur de
«la voie du mal.»
Le roi, sur ces paroles de Beschouten, se repentit
en pensant à ces anciennes histoires, et l'on entendit
de l'enceinte des tentes du roi une voix protlamant :
«0 Pehlewans pleins de justice et de sagesse, pré-
rparez-vous au départ, et gardez-vous de piller et
«de tuer!» Le roi ordonna qu'on ôtât les chaînes des
pieds de Zal, et qu'on lui adréssât beaucoup de
conseils. Par ordre du Destour, le vénérable con-
seiller, on prépara une voûte sépulcrale pour le corps
de Faramourz, et l’on ramena Zal de la prison dans
son palais, où sa noble compagne Roudabeh pleurait
sur lui amèrement, s’écriant : « Hélas! vaillant, hé-
« roïque Rustem, petit-fils de Neriman le brave, l'illus-
«tre, pendant que tu vivais, qui est-ce qui s’apercevait
«que Guschtasp était roi du monde? Maintenant tes
«trésors sont pillés, le Destan est captif, et son fils
«lamentablement tué par les pointes des flèches.
«+ Malheur aux yeux qui sont témoins d’un sort pareil!
« Puisse la terre être délivrée de la race d’fsfendiar! »
Ces plaintes furent rapportées à Bahman et par-
viñrent jusqu’au fortuné Beschouten. Celui-ci devint

plein d'inquiétude pour Roudabeh, et ses joues pà-
lirent lorsqu'il entendit ces lamentations. 1 dit à
Bahman : «O jeune roi! lorsque la lune nouvelle
«sera arrivée à la moitié du firmament, fais partir
« de cette ville ton armée à l'aube du jour; car cette
«affaire devient difficile et dangereuse. Puisse l'œil
«des méchants ne pas atteindre ta couronne, puisse
+ chacun de tes jours être une fête! Il ne convient pas
e que le roi des rois reste longtemps dans cette maison
« de Zal fils du vaillant Sam. » Lorsque les montagnes
furent couleur de sandaraque, le son des timbales se
fit entendre du portail du palais, et le roi conduisit
son armée vers le pays d'Iran; 11 la conduisit du
Zaboulistan vers le pays des braves. Ensuite il se
reposa et s'assit sur son trône joyeusement, gou-
vernant le monde selon les règles et la justice. Il
distribua aux pauvres un trésor d'argent; 1 rendit
heureux les uns et mécontents les autres.
BAHMAN ÉPOUSE SA FILLE HOMAÏ ET LUI DESTINE
LA SUCCESSION AU TRÔNE.
Ardeschir avait un fils, vainqueur de lions, à qui
il avait donné le nom de Sasan, et une fille appelée
Homaï, pleine d'adresse, de savoir et de bonnes in-
tentions, à qui l’on donnait aussi le nom de Tchebrzad.
Sa vue faisait le bonheur de son père dans le monde,
et 11 l’épousa à cause de sa beauté, ce que lui per-
meftait la religion qu'on appelle pehlewie. Homaï,

cette lune brillante qui charmait les cœurs, devint
enceinte du roi, et lorsque, dans son sixième mois,
elle commença à souffrir, Bahman, qui s’en aperçut,
devint malade. Lorsque le roi se sentit mourir de son
mal, il fit venir auprès de lui Homaï, appela les
grands et les hommes à l'étoile fortunée , et fit asseoir
Homaï sur le trône du pouvoir; ensuite il dit: « Voici
e Tchehrzad, au corps pur, elle n’a pas joui de beau-
«coup de bonheur dans la vie; je lui donne 1a cou-
eronne et le trône sublime, je lui donne l’armée, le
«trésor et ma haute fortune. Elle sera mon succes-
«seur dans le monde, elle et l'enfant qui naïîtra d'elle
«en secret; que ce soit une fille ou un fils, ce trône,
+ cette couronne et cette ceinture lui appartiendront. »
Sasan l'écoute, son esprit se trouble, et les paroles
de Bahman assombrissent son âme. Pendant trois
jours et trois nuits il se dirigea, dans sa honte,
comme un léopard, de l'Iran vers un autre pays;
courut jusqu'à ce qu'il eût atteint la ville de Nischa-
pour; il était plein de tristesse, et voulut être loin
de son père. Il demanda pour ferme une fille d’une
famille puissante, ï la chérit et l’estima comme sa
vie; mais il ne dit à personne dans le monde sa
naissance, 1l tint secrète. cette vérité. Cette femme
au corps pur mit au monde un bel enfant du noble
Sasan fils de Bahman; son père lui donna aussi le
nom de Sasan, et puis mourut subitement. Lorsque
cet enfant eut grandi et fut devenu homme, il ne vit

dans cette maison que pauvreté; alors 1l se chargea
d'un troupeau de chevaux du roi de Nischapour
qui errait dans la montagne et dans les plaines, et
il resta pendant longtemps pâtre du roi, et sa de-
meure était dans la montagne et dans le désert.
Maintenant je reviens aux affaires de Homaï, qui
prit la place de Bahman aprës sa mort.

XVI. HOMAI (Son règne dura 32 aus.)
HOMAÏ ABANDONNE AU COURS DE L'EUPHRATE SON FILS
DARAB, ENFERMÉ DANS UNE BOÎTE.
Ardeschir mourut de sa maladie, et le cœur de sa
file, qui charmait les âmes, fut gonflé de sang dans
sa douleur; elle porta le deuil de Bahman et passa
bien des jours absorbée par son malheur. À la fin
Homaï se montra, posa la couronne sur sa tête, et
commença une vie et une manière nouvelles; elle
admit à sa cour toute son armée, elle ouvrit la porte
du trésor et distribua de l'or; elle surpassa son père
en sagesse et en équité, et par sa Justice rendit pros-
père le monde entier. Elle disait : « Puisse cette cou-

«craindre à cause de leurs richesses.”
“Lorsque le temps de ses couches fut arrivé, elle
se cacha de la ville et de l'armée. Elle aimait le
trône de la royauté et se plaisait à être la maîtresse
de la terre; lorsqu'elle mit au monde en secret un
fils, elle n’en dit rien, et ne regardait sa naissance
comme un bonheur que si elle restait inconnue. Elle
fit amener une nourrice de race libre (persane), une
femme sainte, modeste et belle, à qui elle remit en
secret son enfant, cette branche verte qui devait
porter fruit; et si quelqu'un lui parlait de son fils.
elle répondait que ce noble enfant élait mort.
. Elle plaça sur sa tête la couronne de la royauté,
et s'assit sur le trône victorieuse et heureuse; partout
où 11 y avait un ennemi puissant, elle envoyait une
armée, et tout ce qui.se passait dans le monde de
bien et de mal ne restait pas secret pour elle; elle
ne faisait dans le monde, que ce qui était juste et
bon, et elle maintenait dans l’ordre la terre entière;
les hommes avaient confiauce dans sa justice, et l'on
ne parlait que d'elle dans tous les pays.
Cest ainsi que se passèrent huit mois; son fils
commençait à ressembler au roi défunt; alors Homaï
ordonna à un charpentier intelligent de choisir une
planche pour un travail délicat; 1l fit une belle boîte
de ce bois sec et la recouvrit de bitume et de muse:
on en doubla mollement l'intérieur avec du brocart

de Roum, et l’on appliqua sur de dehors de la glu et
de la cire; ensuite la reine y plaça un matelas rempli
de perles de belle eau; on versa beaucoup d'or rouge
dans cette boîte, mêlé à des cornalines et des chryso-
prases, et l’on attacha un joyau digne d’un roi au
bras du petit nourrisson. Dans un moment où l'en-
fant était accablé de sommeïl, la nourrice aux mains
adroiles alla, en se lamentant, le placer doucement,
bien doucement dans la boite, et l'enveloppa chau-
dement dans de la soie de Chine. On calfeutra le
couvercle de la boite étroite avec de la glu , de l’'ambre,
de la cire et du musc, et, au milieu de la nuit, des
hommes l'enlevèrent en observant le plus profond
silence; ils l'emportèrent de chez Homaï et la dépo-
sèrent dans l'eau de l'Euphrate. Ensuite ces deux
hommes la suivirent'pour voir ce que l’eau ferait
de cet enfant qui se nourrissäit encore de lait; la
boîte voguait sur l’eau comme une barque, et ses
gardiens eurent besoin de courir.
Lorsque l'aurore se montra sur les montagnes, la
boîte s'arrêta sur le bord du fleuve, à un lavoir où se
trouvait une pierre avec laquelle les ouvriers avaient
rétréci l'entrée du canal. Un blanchisseur vit la petite
boîte, accourut et la tira du lavoir: il l'ouvrit, sou-
leva les enveloppes de l'enfant, et resta confondu de
son aventure. [1 couvrit Îa boîte avec du linge et
l’emporta en toute hâte, rempli d'espérance, le cœur
Joyeux et l'esprit enchanté. Un des gardiens de l’en-

fant courut chez la mère et lui raconta l'histoire de
la boite et du blanchisseur. La prudente reine du
monde dit à ce témoin : «Il faut tenir caché tout ce
«que Îu as vu.» |
LE BLANCHISSEUR ÉLÈVE DARAB.
Le blanchisseur revint de la rivière à une heure
indue; alors sa femme lui dit : « Voilà une belle ré-
«colte! Tu reviens avec ton linge à demi mouillé; qui
est-ce qui te payera pour une pareille besogne?»
Or le cœur du blanchisseur était désolé de la mort
d'un enfant intelligent, et sa femme ne cessait de se
lamenter de cette perte, ses joues étaient déchirées,
son âme était assombrie. Le mari lui dit: « Reviens
e donc à la raison; tu vas voir combien tu as tort de
«crier ainsi. Si ma digne compagne veut tenir secrète
emon aventure, Je la lui raconterai. J'ai aperçu dans.
«le canal, auprès de la pierre sur laquelle je bats
«mon linge et où je le rince lorsqu'il est devenu
epropre, une boite dans laquelle on avait caché un
enfant. Je vais ouvrir le couvercle fermé, et quand
«tu verras cel enfant, tu en auras envie. Nous avons
eu un fils qui n’a pas vécu longiemps; il est mort, :
«et maintenant tu retrouves inopinément un fils
«couvert de brocart et de joyaux.»
Il posa par terre le paquet de linge et ouvrit le
couvercle de la petite boîte; sa ferme vit l'enfant et
resta confondue; elle appela sur lui les grâces du

Créateur du monde. Elle vit au milieu de soiries un
visage brillant dont les traits ressemblaient à Arde-
schir. Son chevet était rempli de perles de belle eau.
à ses pieds se trouvaient des cornalines et des chry-
soprases, à sa gauche des pièces d'or rouge, à sa
droite un grand nombre de rubis. La femme lui
donna sur-le-champ son sein plein de lait; elle fut
ravie de ce nourrisson qui charmait les cœurs. La
beauté de l'enfant et les trésors de la boîte lui firent
oublier ses chagrins. Le blanchisseur lui dit: «Il ne
«faut jamais cesser de le chérir comme notre vie,
«car c'est l'enfant d’un homme illustre, c’est un des
«rois du monde. » La femme l'adopta comme s'il avait
été de la famille, comme s'il avait été son propre
fils, et le troisième jour on lui donna le nom de
Darab, parce qu'on avait fait de la rivière son ber-
ceau.
Un jour, la femme , qui était de bon conseil, causa
de toutes choses avec le maitre de la maison, et lui
dit : « Que feras-tu maintenant de ces joyaux. ll faut
« que la sagesse te guide en cela.» Le blanchisseur
répondit : 60 ma bonne compagne, des joyaux ca-
‘«chés ne me servent pas plus que de la poussière;
«1l vaut mieux que nous quittions cette ville et que
«nous échappions au loin à notre misère et à nos
« dangers. Allons dans un pays où personne ne nous
«connaît, et ne sait si nous sommes des pauvres ou
«+ des gens heureux et puissants.» A l'aube du jour

le blanchisseur fit ses préparatifs de voyage el partit
sans dire dans quel pays il allait. [ls portèrent Darab
sur leurs bras, et ne se chargèrent que de joyaux et
d'or. Le blanchisseur quitta ce lieu, fit soixante far-
sangs et choisit sa demeure dans un autre pays; 1l
s'établit dans une ville étrangère, avec l'apparence
d’un homme riche. Le blanchisseur envoyait des
pierreries dans une ville où résidait un prince 1l-
lustre, et obtenait en échange des étoffes, de l’ar-
gent et de l'or. A la fin il ne lui resta plus. beaucoup
de joyaux, et il n'eut plus chez lui, de tout ce qui
s'était trouvé dans la boîte, que le joyau rouge qui
‘avait été attaché au bras de l'enfant. La femme du
blanchisseur, qui était en toutes choses le guide de
son mari, lui dit un jour : + Nous n'avons päs besoin
«de travailler, tu es riche; ne t'occupe donc pas de
«ton métier. » Le mari lui répondit ; « O ma compagne
«respectée, mon guide dans la vie, tu peux appeler
métier loute occupation ; et qu'y a-t-il de mieux qu'un
emétier? c'est toujours le commencement de toute
«chose. Rends Darab pur et bon, et tu verras quel
cfruit portera le temps.” Et ils l'élevèrent avec tant
de tendresse que jamais un vent rude ne l'atteignit.
Lorsque ie ciel eut tourné sur Darab pendant
quelques années, il devint un jeune homme noble
et fort. Il luttait dans la rue avec les jeunes gens
plus âgés que lui, mais aucun d’eux n'avait un corps
et des forces comme lui: tous les enfants se réunis-

saient contre lui, mais Lous ensemble le redoutaient.
Le blanchisseur se lamentait sur cette conduite, et
ses espérances s'évanouissaient. [l lui disait : « Bats
«ce linge sur la pierre, car ce n’est pas une honte
« pour toi d'apprendre un métier.» Mais Darab fuyait
l'ouvrage, et le blanchisseur versait des larmes de
sang dans son chagrin; la moitié de son temps se
passait à chercher les traces de Darab dans la ville
et la campagne. Un jour il le trouva quelque part,
un arc en main, la poitrine développée selon la
règle, et le pouce armé de l'anneau; il lui prit l'arc
et lui dit froidement : O0 vaurien d'enfant, qui ne
« rêves que batailles, pourquoi t'occupes-tu toujours
«de flèches et d’arcs? comment es-tu devenu mé-
«chant de si bonne heure?» Darab lui répondit ::
«O mon père, tu troubles mon eau (tu m'empèêches
« d'arriver à la gloire). Mels-moi d'abord entre les
«mains des savants; quand j'aurai bien appris le
« Zendavesta, alors tu m'enseigneras un métier et la
«morale; mais maintenant n'exige pas que je sois
«grave.» Le blanchisseur lui parla longuement, puis
il le confia à des maîtres. Darab apprit les sciences,
acquit de la dignité et cessa de se mal conduire et
de mériter des reproches. À la fin il dit à son père
nourricier :60 mon père, je ne deviendrai jamais
«un bon blanchisseur. Que ta tendresse pour moi ne
«te donne pas-de l'inquiétude; fais de moi un cava-
«lier. » Le blanchisseur chercha un cavalier accompli,

sachant manier les rênes et lancer un cheval, uu
homme de bon renom, et le lui confia pendant long-
temps. Darab apprit de lui tout ce dont il avait-be-
soin : de tenir la bride, la lance et le bouclier, de
faire faire la volte à un destrier sur le champ de ba-
taille, de se servir de la raquette, de l'arc et des
flèches, de se battre bravement et de se dérober à
l'ennemi. [| acquit tout cela au point que les léopards
n'osaient pas frotter leurs ongles contre lui dans le
combat. - | |
DARAB DEMANDE À LA FEMME DU BLANCHISSEUR SON ORIGINE, ET VA À LA GUERRE CONTRE LE ROUM.
Un jour Darab dit au blanchisseur : r J'ai un se-
«cret que je n'ose pas m'avouer à moi-même : je ne
«suis pas ému d’un amour fihal pour toi, mes traits
«ne ressemblent pas aux tiens, et je suis toujours
étonné quand tu m'appelles ton fils, quand tu me
fais asseoir auprès de-toi dans ta boutique.» Le
blanchisseur lui répondit : « Voilà des paroles qui
«font revivre les douleurs des péines passées et an-
eciennes. Si ton ambition est plus grande que ma
«condition, recherche ton père : ton secret appar-
etient à ta mère.» Or il arriva qu'un jour le blan-
chisseur sortit en toute hâte pour aller à la rivière;
Darab ferma solidement la porte, saisit son épée et
rentra chez sa mère, disant : «Ne cherche pas à
e mentir et à me tenir dans l'obscurité; dis la vérité

«sur tout ce que je te.demande. Que vous suis-je?
« Quelle est ma naissance? Pourquoi me trouvé-je
«chez un blanchisseur?» |
La femme, dans sa terreur, lui demanda grâce,
et invoqua la protection du Maitre suprème. Elle
répondit : «Ne verse pas mon sang, je te dirai tout
«ce que tu demandes.» Elle lui raconta en détail,
avec exactitude , et en écartant tout mensonge, l'his-
toire entière de la boîte, du petit nourrisson, de l'or
et des joyaux dignes d’un roi, ajoutant : Nous étions
« des artisans, nous n'étions point d'une famille puis-
«sante. C'est à ton trésor que nous devons tout ce
«que nous avons, c'est par lui que nous sommes
«sortis d’une condition infime. Nous sommes des
“esclaves, c'est à toi de commander; réfléchis à ce
«que tu veux, nos Corps et nos âmes sont à toi.»
Darab resta confondu à ces paroles , et son esprit
se recueillit pour réfléchir; à la fin 1l demanda :
« Reste-t-1l quelque chose de ces richesses, ou le
æblanchisseur les a-t-1l toutes dissipées? Reste-1-1l
+ de quoi acheter un destrier, dans cet état d'abais-
*sement et de misère?» La femme lui dit: «ii en
«reste assez, et plus que cela : il y a de l'argent, un
«jardin fruitier et des terres.» Elle lui donna tout
l'or qu'elle avait, et il restait cette grande pierre fine
toute intacte. Darab acheta un noble cheval, une selle
bon marché, une massue et un lacet.
{y avait un commandant de frontière, homme de

valeur et de sens, puissant, agréable et de bon con-
sell. Darab se rendit auprès de lui, l'âme troublée
et pleine de’ soucis. Le commandant le traita hono-
rablement. et la fortune lui fut favorable. Mais à
arriva qu'une armée vint du pays de Roum et dé-
vasta cette riche frontière; le commandant fut tué
dans le combat, et son armée resta ainsi sans chef.
Quand Homaï reçut la nouvelle que les gens de
Roum avaient envahi cette frontière, elle ordonna à
un homme nommé Reschnewad, qui était un Si-
pehbed et d'une famille de Sipehbeds, de marcher
contre les Roumis, et de convertir avec l'épée leur
pays en un désert. Reschnewad rassembla à l'instant
une armée, fixa un lieu de rassemblement et paya
la solde.
Cette nouvelle remplit de joie Darab, il accourut
et se fit inscrire. Lorsque beaucoup de troupes ve-
nant de tous côtés furent réunies, et que des corps
furent arrivés de partout, Homaï sortit du palais im-
périal, entourée de chefs, ses conseillers fidèles, pour
faire défiler devant elle l'armée et vérifier les hommes
et leurs noms sur les rôles. Elle se tenait depuis
quelque temps sur la large plaine, et beaucoup de
troupes avaient défilé devant elle, lorsqu'elle.aperçut
Darab, à l'aspect noble, de haute stature, la massue
de fer sur l'épaule; on aurait dit qu'il remplissait.
toute la plaine et que la terre pliait sous les pas de
son destrier. Lorsqu'elle vit cette poitrine et ces traits

qui charmaient les cœurs, le lait coula de son sein
maternel. Elle demanda : «D'où vient ce cavalier
“avec ces bras et cette taille haute et droite? I est
«brave, portant haut la tête et vaillant; mais son
«armure n'est pas digne de lui.» Lorsqu'elle eut
admiré la beauté de Darab, elle approuva la tenue
de toute l’armée. Elle choisit, d’après les astres, un
jour selon toutes les règles pour l'entrée en campagne
du Sipehbed, et lorsque les chefs furent unanimes
là-dessus, ils emmenèrent l'armée. Homaï envoya des
espions aclifs, pour que rien ne lui restât caché,
pour qu'elle apprit ce qui arriverait de bon et de
mauvais à l’armée, et pour qu'elle ne se tourmentät
pas des malheurs possibles. L'armée s'avança de sta-
tion en station, la terre se couvrit de troupes, et le
ciel devint noir par la poussiere. .
RESCHNEWAD APPREND LA VÉRITÉ SUR DARAB,
Un jour il s’éleva un orage qui donnait des soucis
à Reschnewad. IT y avait des tonnerres continus, de
la pluie avec des éclairs, l'air était agité, la terre
mondée et le ciel grondait. Les hommes couraient de
tous côtés pour échapper à la pluie et dressaient
des tentes dans la plaine. Darab aussi était inquiet
et cherchait un refuge contre la pluie; ïl n'avait pas
de tente, ni grande n1 pelite; 11 n'avait ni abri, ni
compagnon, ni guide. Îl regarda partout, et vit des
ruines au milieu desquelles restait debout une voûte

élevée et ancienne, mais endommagée : c'était uu
édifice royal de grande hauteur. Il fallait qu'il se
couchät sous cette voûle délabrée, car il était toul
seul, sans aide el sans compagnon.
Le Sipehbed fit la ronde autour de l'armée, et *
passa devant cette voûte en mauvais état; une voix
qui venait des ruines frappa son oreille, un bruit
sortant de ce lieu de terreur lui arriva, disant : «0
- voûte délabrée, prends garde, veille sur ce roi d'I-
eran! Îl n'avait ni tente, ni aide, ni compagnon, il
«s’est réfugié sous toi et s’est endormi.» Reschnewad
se dit en lui-même que ce devait être le bruit du
tonnerre ou du vent; mais une seconde fois la voix
se fit entendre des ruines, disant : «O voûte, ne
« ferme pas l'œil de la prudence! car tu abrites le fils
«du roi Ardeschir; ne crains pas la pluie, et fais
«attention à mes paroles. » Reschnewad entendit trois
fois cette voix, qui lui serra étrangement le cœur. Il
dit à un homme de sens : « Qu'est-ce que cela peut
être? Il faut que quelqu'un entre sous cette voûte
“pour voir qui y est couché et savoir qui esl si
ralarmé pour sa vie.» On y entra et l'on y vil un
jeune homme ayant l'air intelligent et la mine d'un
Pehlewan; ses habits et son cheval étaient tout
mouillés et. en mauvais état, et 11 avait fait du sol
noir son lieu de repos. On rapporta au Sipehbed ce
qu'on avait vu, et le cœur du Pehlewan bondit à ce
récit. JL ordonna qu'on réveillât à l'instant l’homme

endormi et d'une voix telle qu'il devait l'entendre; on
entra et on lui dit : 60 dormeur, réveille-toi de ce
«sommeil sur la dure!» Darab monta à cheval, et
la voûte s’écroula sur-le-champ.
Quand le chef de l’armée de la reine vit ce mi-
racle, il regarda Darab de la tête aux pieds, et dit :
« Voici une merveille qui me confond: on ne peut
«rien concevoir au delà.» H partit à l'instant avec lui
pour son campement, disant : 60 Dieu unique, :
«maître de la justice, personne dans le monde n’a
«jamais vu une pareïlle merveille, n1 n'en a entendu
«parler par les grands qui ont de l'expérience!»
fit apporter des vêtements, préparer une place dans
une tente et allumer un feu comme une montagne,
dans lequel il brüla beaucoup d’aloès, de musc et
d'ambre. -
Lorsque le soleil montra sa tête au-dessus de la
cime des montagnes, le Sipehbed se prépara pour
le départ; il ordonna au Mobed qui lui servait de
guide de demander un habillement complet, de la
tête aux pieds, un cheval arabe avec une bride d’or,
une ceinture et une épée à fourreau d’or. Ï1 donna
tout cela à Darab et lui adressa des questions, di-
sant : rO homme au cœur de lion, 6 prince qui re-
«cherches la gloire! qui es-tu, quelle est ta nais-
«sance, quel est ton pays? Il faudrait me le dire
«selon la vérité.» Darab l’écouta et lui raconia tout,
lui dévoila tout ce qui s'était passé; il répéta à Resch-

newad tout ce que cette femme lui avait dit sur la
boîte, sur le joyau rouge altaché à son bras, sur
l'or et les brocarts dignes d'un Pehlewan qui l'a-
vaient enveloppé; enfin il raconta au chef de l'ar-
mée l'historre de son repos et de son sommeil dans
le lieu. où 11 s'était caché. °
Reschnewad expédia sur-le-champ un messager à
qui ül dit : « Va comme le vent, et amène ici le blan-
«chisseur, sa femme et leur joyau, amène Mars et
e Vénus (c'est-à dire l’homme et la femme). »
DARAB SE BAT CONTRE L'ARMÉE DE ROUM.
Ayant donné cet ordre, le chef de l'armée partit
et mena ses troupes de cette frontière jusque dans
le Roum. donna à Darab l'avant-garde, qui avait
des lances fraîchement aiguisées, et marcha contre
les Roumis. Le commandant de cette frontière s’a-
vança de son côté, les troupes des deux royaumes
se rencontrèrent, et la poussière du combat s’éleva
à l'instant. Îl y eut une mêlée générale , et l’on versa
des torrents de sang. Darab, voyant cette grande ar-
mée, s'élança comme un loup, et tua tant d'hommes
de l’armée de Roum qu'on aurait dit que le ciel
tenait en main une épée. ll continua à frapper comme
un lien, un crocodile dans la main, un dragon sous
lui, jusqu’à ce qu'il eût pénétré dans le camp des
Roumis, semblable à un lion furieux, couvrant la
terre d’une mer de sang ennemi, et ne suivant, dans

son ambition, d'autre guide que son épée, Il revint
victorieux auprès du chef de l’armée qui portait
haut la tête, et fut couvert de bénédictions par Resch-
newad, qui lui dit : ePuisse l'armée de la reine
« n'être] jamais privée de toi! Quand nous reviendrons
«de cette guerre contre le Roum, et que l'armée
«rentrera dans notre pays, tu recevras de la reine de
«grandes récompenses en chevaux et en trésors, en
« trônes et en casques. »
L'armée passa toute la nuit à se préparer au combat
et à fourbir les armures des cavaliers. Lorsque le
soleil avança la tête au-dessus des sombres hauteurs,
et que la terre fut devenue commé un flambeau
brillant, les deux armées s’avancèrent, la poussière
obscurcit le soleil lumineux; Darab s’élanca et at-
taqua l'ennemi, en abandonnant les rênes à son
cheval ardent; 1l ne laissa en vie aucun de ceux qui.
sortaient des rangs des Roumis; 1l laissa en vie peu
de braves qui frappaient avec l'épée; 1l pénétra dans
le centre de l'ennemi comme un loup, et dispersa
cette grande armée: ensuite il se tourna vers l'aile
droite, et en rapporta beaucoup d’armures et de bu-
tin; il rompit tous les rangs des Roumis, et aucun
de leurs héros ne retrouvait son ancien courage.
Les braves de l'Iran se précipitèrent vaillamment,
comme des lions, sur ses traces, et ils tuèrent tant
de Roumis, que le sang convertit en boue la pous-
sière du champ de bataille. Darab tua, parmi les

héros, quarante évêques, et revint tenant en main
une croix qu'il avait prise. Reschnewad vit ces hauts
faits étonnants, et le cœur du Pehlewan bondit de
joie; il le bénit, lui fit de grandes louanges et Île
couvrit de marques d'amitié encore plus que de
bénédicüions.
La nuit arriva, le monde devint couleur de bi-
tume , et ils renoncèrent tous à continuer le combat.
Le Sipehbed se reposa dans le camp des Roumis et
déboutonna son armure; il distribua pendant la nuit
beaucoup de choses précieuses, et son armée en fut
toute parée. Il envoya quelqu'un auprès de Darab
avec ce message : « O homme au cœur de lion, tou-
«jours secourable, vois ce qui te plait et ce qui peut
etéètre utile parmi ces trésors; garde ce que tu en
«désires, et distribue le reste selon l'impulsion de
«ton cœur; distribue tout ce qui ne te convient pas,
rÔ toi qui es plus illustre que n’était le maïtre de
_eRaksch!» Darab fut heureux de ce message; il
choisit une lance, à cause de l'honneur, et renvoya
tout le reste à Reschnewad en lui faisant dire :
« Puisses-tu être content et victorieux! »
Lorsque la face du soleil eut fait place aux té-
nèbres du côté du couchant, que le ciel eut revêtu
sa robe de. brocart noir, et qu'une garde de la nuit
sombre fut passée, Reschnewad fit traverser par des
rondes toute la plaine; les cris des sentinelles écla-
taient comme des tremblement de terre, et les lions

qui rôdaient s'enfuirent devant ce bruit. Lorsque le
soleil eut relevé son bouclier d'or, la tête des guerriers
sortit du sommeil, les braves de l'Iran se revêtirent
de leur armure et s'élancèrent sur les traces des
Roumis. [ls rallumèrent le feu du combat avec leur
épée tranchante, et brülèrent toutes les villes ;: Roum
et les Roumis furent anéantis , et jamais personne ne
parla plus de ce pays. Il s’éleva un cri de détresse
parmi les Roumis quittant cette contrée qui char-
mait les âmes; cette guerre rendit le monde étroit
pour le Kaïsar, et la joue de ses grands pâlit. Un
envoyé arriva auprès de Reschnewad, disant :
+ Puisse la reine, qui aime la justice, ne pas s’écarter
«de ce qui est juste! Ceux qui avaient désiré la
“guerre sont las des combats; la fortune du Roum
