Here are some of the resources that have answered my questions. I’ll try to update this post every now and then and put a timestamp for when I have most recently updated it. Comment below if you want me to annotate these lists with what I found to be valuable.

General

I highly recommend people spend time learning how to learn effectively1 . This skill transfers into practically all domains.

Books

Deep Work - Cal Newport

The 4 Hour Workweek - Tim Ferriss

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life - Mark Manson

Lying - Sam Harris

Public Speaking for Success - Dale Carnegie

On Writing Well - William Zinsser

Tools

ChatGPT/Claude - Working alongside these models is the future. Find ways to integrate this into your current workflows, there are tons of tutorials online.

Obsidian - My preferred notetaking app. You can connect it with Zotero or other citation managers so that you can refer to papers/books/articles in your notes.

Startups

Most books or podcasts I’ve listened too haven’t been useful in practice (in my minimal startup experience). Most things are best learned by doing, but here were a few resources I found helpful.

Books

The Lean Startup - Eric Ries

The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing - Al Ries, Jack Trout

The Founder’s Dilemmas - Noam Wasserman

Podcasts (mostly helped me generate ideas)

The Tim Ferris Show - Tim Ferris

The Knowledge Project - Shane Parrish

Tools

AWS Startup Credit

Research

Most of these resources are oriented towards PhD students, however their contents are still applicable to undergrads.

General

A Survival Guide to a PhD - Andrej Karpathy blog

Career advice - Terrance Tao blog

BMI 883/884 - Professional Skills

Problem choice and decision trees in science and engineering

Ten simple rules for choosing a PhD supervisor

More detail on picking PhD advisors

How to Solve It: A New Aspect of Mathematical Method - George Pólya

Writing

Tips for Writing Technical Papers

Ten simple rules for structuring papers

Writing Science: How to Write Papers That Get Cited and Proposals that Get Funded - Joshua Schimel

The Scientist’s Guide to Writing - Stephen B Heard

Funding/Fellowships

NSF GRFP

Hertz Fellowship

NSF REU (Undergrad)

Tools

Zotero

1

I have not tried all of these, however this would be a good place to start. This is my first attempt, wish me luck.

I aim to make myself extremely valuable in a field. You may want to do the same. This will require the acquisition of both skills and knowledge. At that point, I imagine our greatest impact will come from carefully choosing which problems to solve and how to solve them.

But what if we valued our time right now the way we want it to be valued later? Then, I think we would give ourselves time to think hard about things, because that's how we'd generate value in the first place. Well, why wait?

My proposition is simple: give yourself downtime to think about anything. But importantly, avoid music, audiobooks, podcasts, or any other consumption of content during this time. Bask in the silence.

This “basking” led me to briefly explore measure theory, a branch of mathematics that formalizes the concept of measurement. Though my exploration was short-lived (I realized I was overcomplicating my study of probability ;)), it exemplifies how this practice has made me more receptive to pursuing random thoughts.

And just maybe, your next random thought will give you the idea to kickstart your career.

Give yourself two weeks. Start with 10-20 minutes, 2-3 times a week. You might be surprised by the ideas you generate.

Coming soon

This is Left As An Exercise To The Reader.

Harmon Bhasin

This is Left As An Exercise To The Reader.
<p class="button-wrapper" data-attrs="{"url":"https://harmonbhasin.substack.com/subscribe?","text":"Subscribe now","action":null,"class":null}" data-component-name="ButtonCreateButton">Subscribe now
