If we build SDL2 from source with the appropriate config parameters, it gets acceleration support without X11 also (which is great). But running it on a 1080p resolution full screen is not very fast, I get max 20 fps after the pieces start coming down (60 fps on title screen).

It's actually faster if you run it from within X11, as I got 30fps there. This is probably related to the scaling it does (full screen to 1080p vs Windowed), but if it was GPU accelerated that should not have mattered normally?
