This repository currently uses jupyterlite-pyodide-kernel, which doesn't support pre-installing packages. See https://jupyterlite.readthedocs.io/en/latest/howto/configure/kernels.html#adding-a-python-kernel for a feature comparison between the two kernels currently available in jupyterlite: jupyterlite-pyodide-kernel and jupyterlite-xeus.

Using jupyterlite-xeus would allow us to pre-install required packages. However, this is not possible until h5py is built on emscripten-forge - the recipes live in https://github.com/emscripten-forge/recipes.
