ionic serve --browser chrome doesn't open Chrome

Short description of the problem:

Using ionic serve --browser chrome doesn't open Chrome on macOS Sierra. However, if you specify the full path to the Google Chrome app it works:

ionic serve --browser /Applications/Google\ Chrome.app/Contents/MacOS/Google\ Chrome

What behavior are you expecting?

Expect Ionic to open a new browser tab in Chrome.
