In some cases you do not wish to start the timing until you pass through the start/finish gate. In those cases, starting the timer on throttle doesn't make sense.

Congrats on the opentx-laptimer! Very slick! That'd be a cool feature 👍! For an Open-Tx w/ LUA newbie how do you get started on this? Constantly test it out in the simulator?
Great, I'm glad you like it. I actually have begun this task and it exists in the "development" branch of the lap timer. However, it uses a GUI library that I'm writing and is not quite ready for prime time. So, what I would do is look at the development branch, port it over to this version and yes, test often in the simulator.
