Depth of Documentation for Templates

When speaking about templates, how in depth do you want the descriptions of each template? For example, the item template has templates for things like tiles. Do you want a description of the contents inside each of them or should the api docs handle that? I am thinking that it should be an overview and the api docs can handle the specifics.
