This was brought up in the Lab weekly as a potential place for improved contributor guidance.

I've added a document get_involved.md in PR #28 for a more comprehensive discussion. Was not sure if the info/discussion should all come here (in this thread), so I ended up creating the document. Let me know if you'd prefer to have them here instead.
