What settings can I or should I change, and how do I change them?

There are a number of jambox settings listed in README.md file that you see on the landing page of this repo: https://github.com/kdoren/jambox-pi-gen/blob/jambox/README.md
They are in the section "Customizable Settings". The default values should work in most cases.

Most jambox config files are under the hidden directory ".config" for user "pi" (/home/pi/.config).
You can navigate around using the file manage ("folder" icon on the taskbar at the top).

However, directories beginning with "." are hidden, so you won't see the .config directory until you select "View" -> "Show Hidden".
Then you can double-click on a config file to edit it, and "File" -> "Save" when you are done.

Files under /etc/ are require root privileges to edit. To do that, open a terminal window ( >_ icon on the taskbar),
Then, for example, to edit /etc/jackdrc.conf

sudo leafpad /etc/jackdrc.conf

then double-click on the "Jamulus Start" or "SonoBus Start" icon to restart your desired app, which will pick up the config changes.

One setting that many people will want to change is "NPERIODS" in /etc/jackdrc.conf.
NPERIODS defaults to 8 to try to work for almost everyone.
But you can get lower latency by setting this lower, which most interfaces can handle.
If you set it too low, you will get crackling or bad distortion, which might not not happen every time.
You want to set NPERIODS to the lowest number that reliably works right.

I don't suggest changing "PERIOD", because 64 is the lowest, and lower is better unless your interface can't handle 64. But most can.

Jambox 1.3.0 allows settings to be different based on app or Raspberry Pi mode. Defaults are now:

• Raspberry Pi 4: PERIOD=64, NPERIODS=8
• Raspberry Pi 3: PERIOD=128, NPERIODS=4

This is to minimize Xrun errors in Raspberry Pi 3, which has lower hardware performance.

Different USB interfaces have different performance, so you may be able to lower your delay by decreasing NPERIODS. Just be aware that there are cases where it can sound fine at one moment, then sound bad after restarting an app.
