Channels and Station should have a standard naming convention, something like FDSN has.
Stations can be more relaxed maybe 8 characters max of alphanumeric, starting with a couple of letter representing the survey and a couple of numbers and or letters representing the station number "CL01" or "CAS04".
Channels can be a little more strict. Should be something like {measurement_type}{component}{channel_number}. The traditional form is x-north and y-east, for component, but with various dipole setups this could be relaxed
measurement types:
E: electric
H or B: magnetic
auxiliary channels could follow FDSN?
Once a standard is set then we can validate the channels and station ID's in a more uniform fashion. But I think this is for the larger community to decide.
