Hi all,
I like to discuss how generational backups work (or should work) and how some example settings can look like.
I have the following settings and somehow they do not work as I expect them to work:
Number of local backups: 10
Number of OneDrive backups: 20
Backup interval (days) : 1
Generational backups - Days : 3
Generational backups - Weeks : 2
Generational backups - Months : 2
Generational backups - Years : 2
I have this settings running for 13 days now and noticed that oldest backups were deleted. As years and month my expectation was that the oldest backup would have been kept and after one month running also a second monthly backup would have been kept.
To debug this a bit further I turned on verbose logging and triggered another backup.
What can then be seen in the logs is that always the newest backups are used to satisfy the generational policies. As I have 11 (the local limit plus the new one) backups this lasts to satisfy all 3 (why are 4 listed?) daily, 2 weekly and one monthly and yearly backups. And always the newest are considered for this. Then the oldest backup is deleted.
This means also that another monthly or even yearly will never be satisfied!
Do I have a misinterpretation of how this should work? Can someone explain or provide example settings with expected outcome?
Best Regards, Stefan
