The old sending API is comically confusing, the new one (with auto-retries, though of course someone can disable by setting the retry count limit to zero) is much cleaner in every way. We should deprecate the old sending API and then remove it eventually. Would love to do this for 0.1 since it'd clean up the API a good bit.
