We could save money on MailChimp by moving to a self-hosted newsletter based on Sendy. Sendy is a one-time $69 purchase (no subscription) and uses AWS SES for outgoing mail (10¢ per 1000 emails).
In addition to sending emails, MailChimp also provides email templates, previews, etc. Reliably rendering HTML in email is even worse and less predictable than in browsers. Any complete solution would have to address this as well. We could possibly use something like the 11ty email generator to build this.
I run a sendy instance at newsletterhost.net if we want a play around and proof-of-concept.
