The plugin appears to have stopped working suddenly.

I'm not sure whats happening yet, it could be y issue (although nothing has changed in my build).
The plugin seems to run, but the strings file is not updated.

I notice that there is a new API, so I'm wondering if this could have caused the trouble?

Indeed API 1 is deprecated and that must be the cause. I have the same problem.
"Warning! API v1 has been deprecated. Use API v2 instead."

This project hasn't been touched in 6 years. Migration time again.
