Unclear how to explain this, but I had this plugin working brilliantly in a fairly high-stakes project for several weeks and now I cannot get it to work...

I've taken things back to basics to attempt to isolate the cause, and I can't get even the most basic demonstrations to work.

Is it possible that some kind of spec change in modern browsers no longer accommodates it?
