Synopsis

In this introductory episode on how to become a web developer, we will look at the history of the internet from a web developer perspective.

Why did we start communicate over the internet?
Where did the web browser come from?
Why does it say HTTP in front of a web site?
What is the job of a web developer?

These and more burning questions will be answered in this episode of Becoming a Web Dev.

Why did we start communicating over the internet?

The broadest answer to why we started to communicate over the internet can be summarized in one word: accessibility.

Accessibility in the sense that everyone was allowed to connect to the internet and anyone was allowed to publish on the internet. The usefulness of this was historically unequivocal.

Internet as we know it today evolved from the need to be able to send information between electronic computers in the 1950s. It was gradually changed and improved until research at the CERN institute in Switzerland, layed the foundation for what we call the World Wide Web.

The World Wide Web is simply the concept of publishing a piece of information globally that points to other globally accessible pieces of information. The most popular piece of information used today is the Web Page which is accessed via a Web Browser.

What is a web browser and where did it come from?

The web browser was part of World Wide Web foundation and the first web browser was written by Tim Berners-Lee. Originally its name was WorldWideWeb but was later renamed to Nexus to avoid confusion.
