PowerToys Settings not opening :( #23982
Comments
/reportbug |
Do you have the icon in the system tray? |
When you say “open”, walk me through this |
I'm getting a similar problem after the most recent update (0.67.1)
PowerToysReport_2023-02-09-00-09-37.zip Edit: I can also confirm that my problem can be fixed by downgrading to 0.67.0 |
@RMWinslow perfectly described what's happening! |
@RMWinslow , Looking at the installfolderstructure.txt from the bug report, it looks like some previous files from 0.67.0 were not upgraded correctly. Specifically PowerToys.Interop.dll Would you mind: Please let us know if this works for you. @stefansjfw , We've had other cases recently where this also happened for PowerToys.Interop.dll . Can you check if there's anything different about PowerToys.Interop.dll or add some logs we can see in the reports? |
Should I also do what's been instructed to @RMWinslow ? |
Yes, please. |
Thanks for the update. I'll close the issue for now. If it happens again, feel free to reopen it. |
I am getting the same problem. Does not start, nothing in tray. No previous files in Program Files prior to install. Windows 11, Insider, Release channel. |
@yashamon Could you attach /bugreport? |
How can I attach bug report? Nothing shows up in system tray. In fact, if I execute powertoys.exe in shell there is no output at all. |
Sorry, forgot to mention the workaround for bug report. Go to Program files (or any dir Powertoys is installed in)/tools and run BugReportTool.exe. it should generate zip file on your Desktop. Thanks |
Sorry for late reply I was travelling. I get: NativeCommandExitException:
Program "PowerToys.BugReportTool.exe" ended with non-zero exit code:
-1073740791.

I have a feeling that my dot net libraries are corrupted. How would I fix
that?

Nevermind, after uninstalling powertoys everything works well. So it is not
my libraries.

I've been using powertoys since 0.43 (21?) and its always been stable and a great tool! Since the upgrade to 0.7? powertoys or settings won't open. Any attempt to interact causes windows explorer to 'die' . Windows 11 is patched up to date and I've attached a report. I've uninstalled and checked the install directory is empty. then downloaded the lastest binaries from github manually . Normally I let powertoys update automatically . |
This fixed by the last malwarebytes update |
I have the same issue with version 0.73.0: It seems like all of the Tools are working but I cannot open the PowerToys overview or its settings (when I click on it, nothing happens). But I was able to generate the ZIP with the report: Edit: Every time I want click on the PowerToys-Icon in the systray, the following Error gets listed in the Windows Event Viewer (unfortunately my system language is German):
As reported previously, a reinstall will help to resolve the problem but I think it's better to fix the error that is causing that problem. |
I'm having a similar issue, I tried to open, I see the windows but it closes before I can interact with the window of PowerToys. |
I'm having the same issue, using latest version as of this post. Uninstalled and Reinstalled several times but no luck. Whenever I try to launch settings from the Taskbar it never opens. |
Same issue, the only way to solve it was to uninstall everything with Bulk Crap Unninstaller, deleting the Registry Keys and Power Automate, which has a different entry somehow. Then installed from Microsoft Store, not the installer in the website. That solved the issue, tried everything suggested here and some other options I found online and nothing seemed to help but this. |
Same issue, PowerToys v0.80.1 loads into the System Tray but I can't get the Settings to open. Downloaded from Microsoft Store. |

Same Issue |
I'm also experiencing this on my work machine. Application appears to be running, but settings and other screens won't open. The frame of the window appears, but then disappears before any content is shown. Downgrading to 0.80.1 seems to fix the problem. At least the screens will open. Bug report from 0.80.1 attached. |
If you installed powertoys in Microsoft store, the path would be "C:\Users(username)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\PowerToys".
|
I'm dealing with the same issue. I've updated to 0.88.0 and the issue persists. Originally, functions would not trigger though uninstalling and reinstalling fixed that. Neither settings nor quick access open however. |
+1 to the issue, can't open powertoys any more. Tried uninstalling, purging and re-install. (both system wide and user install and via MS-store). |
