Does this release include any improvements that also applies to WSL 1? Or is it just WSL 2

Isn't the 2 in the release version (2.6.0) referring to WSL 2?

Or maybe not, but I can't remember any of the releases here including stuff specifically for WSL 1.

No bug here, just wanted to say it's really exciting to get WSL 2 open sourced, can't wait for the various new features and improvements that come along when something's open source.

There's still a small sliver in my mind that finds it weird that Microsoft embraced Linux so much that it brought it in Windows, and more so now that it becomes open-source. But I guess those damn first impressions never truly fade away :D

PS. Awww, it even got its own open source documentation with MkDocs (wsl.dev) 😍

Systemd/D-Bus is still busted.

• On OracleLinux7:

  • systemctl doesn't work

    Failed to get D-Bus connection: No such file or directory
    

  • it takes ~20 seconds to boot
  • dmesg:

    Failed to get D-Bus connection: Operation not permitted
    Failed to get D-Bus connection: No such file or directory
    ERROR: WaitForBootProcess:3379: /sbin/init failed to start within 10000ms
    ERROR: CreateLoginSession:2731: Timed out waiting for user session for uid=1000
    

  • after boot:

    wsl: Failed to start the systemd user session for 'my_username'. See journalctl for more details.
    

  • strace systemctl:

    connect(3, {sa_family=AF_UNIX, sun_path="/var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket"}, 33) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
    

• On OracleLinux8:

  • systemctl works
  • This error is still appearing sometimes, so there's still some race condition:

    wsl: Failed to start the systemd user session for 'my_username'. See journalctl for more details.
    

  • When the previous message is printed then this line is also printed in dmesg:

    ERROR: operator():2720: /usr/bin/systemctl is-active [email protected] returned: failed

The "wsl: Failed to start the systemd user session for 'my_username'." error also happening on Alma 9.

Somehow, pulseaudio could not work with this version. My solution is removing this service.

Try to remove pulseaudio:

systemctl --user mask pulseaudio.service pulseaudio.socket
sudo apt remove pulseaudio

The system will install PipeWire instead.

In my case, it did work but only when the WSL had already been running. The service would be fail if the WSL restarts.
